Abbotsford Restorative Justice and Advocacy Association Looking for Volunteer Mentors Do you have a passion for helping youth in conflict with the law? Do you have an interest in providing support and assistance to those who have been affected by crime? If you are someone who has a strong desire to make a difference in your community you are encouraged to apply as mentor with Abbotsford Restorative Justice & Advocacy Association. Restorative Justice is community-based program driven by volunteers that aims to resolve crime outside of the traditional court system. The program is designed to provide victims with an opportunity to express how the incident has impacted them, help offenders to take responsibility for their actions and to make amends directly to those they have negatively affected. This is often achieved through a face-to-face mediated process. Qualifications 19 years of age or over Excellent communications skills - empathetic listening, and good open questioning Able to support and relate to youth in conflict with the law Appropriate life experience and character Previous training in mediation, peer counselling, crisis counselling, or conflict/dispute resolution is useful but not required Commitment Potential mentors must be willing to make at least a one year commitment and 4 -6 hours per month to the organization Mentors need to make weekly contact with their mentee and meet face - to - face at least once every two weeks Must be willing to complete a police criminal record check Must have transportation for program activities Benefits Contribute to the community and the lives of individuals within that community by healing and repairing relationships Gain beneficial skills and work experience to enhance your career.
